Therapies

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, ACT

encourages people to embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty for them.  ACT develops psychological flexibility and is a form of behavioral therapy that combines mindfulness skills with the practice of self-acceptance.

Behavioral Activation Therapy, BAT

seeks to increase contact with sources of reward by becoming more active. Focus is placed on identifying values that will guide the selection of activities. Behavioral Activation also works on identifying processes that inhibit activation/encourage avoidance and teaching problem solving skills.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, CBT

centers on identifying and changing inaccurate or distorted think patterns, emotional responses, and behaviors.  CBT focuses on using a wide range of strategies to help overcome these thoughts.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, DBT

is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy which main goals are to teach how to live in the moment, develop healthy ways to cope with stress, regulate emotions, and improve relationships with others

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, EMDR

involves attention to three time periods:  the past, present, and future.  Focus is given to past disturbing memories and related events.  Focus is also given to current situations that cause distress, and to developing the skills and attitudes needed for positive future actions.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy

is an approach to couples therapy that includes an assessment of the couple’s relationship and integrates research-based interventions to disarm conflicting verbal communication; increase intimacy, respect, and affection; and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.

Internal Family Systems, IFS

uses Family Systems theory—the idea that individuals cannot be fully understood in isolation from the family unit—to develop techniques to effectively address issues within a person’s internal community. This evidence-based approach assumes each individual possesses a variety of sub-personalities, or “parts,” and attempts to get to know each of these parts better to achieve healing.

Polyvagal Theory

explores the evolutionary role of the vagus nerve in emotion regulation, social connection and our fear responses.
